hello. im working with a 51 f1 with a MII setup and am tryying to determine what lenghth column to start looking into. i will be buying new from flaming river or ididit. i wish to have column shift withe tilt and turn signals. thanks.
The length should be determined by your seat & your height. Sit in yout truck with the steering wheel attached to a 2" piece of PVC pipe or broom stick. Once you get it to where it is comfortable for you that will be the length you are looking for. Keep in mind length of the joints to your rack, the steering wheel adapter, and dept of your steering wheel. I would definitly mock everything before ordering one. Midfifty catalog gives the lengths of steering joints & steering wheel adapter which should be very helpful to you. They are expensive I got mine 28" plain steel many years ago (IDIDIT) tilt for about $200. I know it's a lot more now.
Like Jaye said...steering column length is determined by several factors...seat position, steeringwheel position..and probably most importantly...engine exhaust clearence,or the routing of your universal joints thru the maze of "stuff" in the engine bay. I don"t think there is a one size fits all. The best one for you may not fit or work with the next persons engine/trans/brake combo.... where in Maryland are you??..Anywhere near Westminster?..Give me a holler/PM...we can brainstorm it.
If you want a catalog just go to{ididitinc.com} and request one. I have had a catalog for about three years but decided to go another route and use that money for something else I needed. My guess is probably a 30 or 32 inch column would be what you need ,but you still need to measure before deciding. I believe the column I used from an 89 S-10 Blazer was approx 30 inchs.
I put a 30" flaming River in my 49. Came through the firewall about 2". Worked out real well.
FYI, all of Flaming River columns are Stainless. If you want to spend the time to polish it, it really comes out nice. A lot cheaper than buying it already polished.
I also forgot to mention that I picked mine up from a u-pull it junk yard for 50 bucks and put a new switch in for about 12 bucks. Column looks good and works perfect. Also had a steering wheel I am using. I see a Jeep column on Ebay bid at 150 bucks now. Looks kinda rough to me.

From what I have seen Flaming River columns are better than Ididit. Just my opinion but all of them will do what they are made for.
as mentioned above...pay careful attention to what the interferences are in the engine compartment... headers and such are a bi*ch to move... don't forget the dipstick...
