Hi all, I've had my truck back on the road for a few weeks now and it has generally been running pretty good, until the other day. I was driving thru a shopping centre carpark when all of a sudden the p/s stopped. 3 tight low speed corners then instantaneously no p/s, not much fun! I stopped and checked, no leakage, no missing belt, everything appeared in order.
The Oz version p/s box is an integral unit with the power servo and steering gear all in one unit, just on the other side of the car of course. It has 2.5 turns lock to lock with a variable ratio which makes it near impossible to get full lock without assist.
Both the pump and the steering box were reconditioned while the truck was off the road. I also made up new hoses and hard lines - essentially a totally new system. I've only done about 600 k's since the rebuild with not even a hint of any steering problems until now. I have had the pump checked, no problems with it, and I will be pulling the p/s unit soon to take it back.
Has anyone else had their p/s instantaneously cut out before and have the box be the problem? If so what ended up being the cause?
How do you check the pump? I had a brand new pump fail 2 weeks after I installed it, less than 100 miles of use.
I took it back to the place that reco'd it for me and they checked it on their gear. I figured that it was easier to pull the pump off than the steering box so that was what I did first. Hopefully I'll get a chance to take the steering box off sometime this week and take it back.
I finally got around to putting the p/s pump back on yesterday. I thought I'd check to make sure that the steering was still not working before I went to the effort of taking the box off.
Anyway, it appears that my first diagnosis of the problem was correct, the pump was at fault and I can say with 99.99% assurance that it was the pressure bypass valve. All I can assume is that it made itself unstuck sometime between when I took the pump off and when they tested it.
Anyway, back on and running again. Guess I'll just hit it with a hammer if it stops again.
