I have noticed on my 04 f250 6.0 that about half the time when i get on the accelerator to pass or merge that when I let off the gas I get what sounds like a backfire on the drivers side...Has anyone had this problem or advice...
Describe the sound. I bet it is what is known as "turbo fart". The turbos arent wastegated, so when the boost has nowhere to when you get out of the throttle quick after hard acceleration, the excess boost goes back out the intake.
Now that you mention it that is exactly what it sounds like..I was hitting close to 3000rpm and then let off for someone who pulled out in front of me and thats when it did it. Thanks guys...
The only time I've ever heard my turbo let one rip is when I forgot to plug my MAF in after servicing the air filter and my boost pressures were running way high.
Should the turbo be farting under normal operating conditions, or should it cause concern that something isn't right?
If you have your foot in her(25lbs boost) and chop the throttle (0 lbs boost)it is normal to fart.If the truck farts coming of 10-12 lbs of boost to a couple lbs there is a problem.

I have had my boost up to 29 -30 psi and taken my foot off immediately and my truck has never turbo farted. I have the stock intake system. I wonder if the turbo fart is the starting of stuck vains or something. I don't think it's normal. Has anyone taken their turbo apart to inspect it after they have started to experience the turbo fart noise?
Mine farts in the above situation every time.It could be that it is starting to stick but it is normal on my truck.Flutter Noise on Deceleration:
Some 03-06 trucks may exhibit a fluttering noise from the air filter assambly on deceleration. This is a characteristic of the engine and posses no problems with the engine or turbo. No repair should be attempted. Broadcast Messages 1046, 4818
This condition should be intermittent and typically occurs when the accelerator is quickly released after a hard acceleration. If the flutter occurs at every deceleration, under load or at upshift on acceleration, suspect a sticking VGTurbo actuator or turbo vane ring.

When the turbo starts responding slower due to the vains starting to drag it contributes to the turbo fart.

Thanks for the info guy's! I just hear my turbo whistle wind down to nothing... a great sound!
