Ok, I know "loading up" is probably not the right term but here's what it's doing. I just rebuild the carb but it was doing this before too. WHen you get it cranked it runs but kind of rough and it seems like it "loads up" meaning you have to keep giving it more gas to hold the same RPM. It sounds like something is bogging the motor down or it is straining against something. Then after a while it will start to backfire. It will occasionally backfire really loudly and sometimes seems to puff out the carb instead of the tailpipe right as it stops running. It has a new ignition module and I checked the timing and it appears to be spot on. Also, hooking up the vacuum advance seems to make it backfire worse and quicker. Any ideas?
Well sounds like a power valve went bad, every time you get a backfire you risk blowing the power valve, and that means fuel is dumping in. with a flashlight look at either venturie, and see if fuel drips from them. if so you blew the power valve. What carb is on the engine?
So does the fact that it gets noticeably worse when the vacuum advance in hooked up point to a bad distributor? I'm working on selling it so I'm trying to avoid replacing any more stuff then I have to.
