I just stick a shop rag into the intake and turbo openings when I have the Y pipe off. With them poked down into the holes you don't have to worry about knocking off tape or a cover, then just pull them out when you're done.
Great write-up and pictures! The photos really helped me today when looking for a leak on my '96. By the way, mine does have the metal protector over the fuel lines. As a side note, how do you like your 80 hp Big Hoss chip? Do your EGTs run high with it? I have my Big Hoss set at 60 hp and like it a lot, but a little more power would be nice when towing my 5th wheel. My EGTs are okay, but I don't have an intercooler so I wondered how the 80 hp setting would be. Thanks for the great pictures!
I now a fuel leak. I replaced the vacuum switch but didn't have the right tool to R&R the banjo bolt to replace the washers. Anyone remember what size it is?
How do I remove/loosen the fuel filter housing to access the lower blue hose? My hoses are so stiff I couldn't get them to wiggle free.
I'm heading to CA next weekend and was hoping to have this done before I left. I had abdominal surgery in late-January, so laying across the engine is extremely painful for me.
I'll hafta look into replacing that "control", too, just to have it done. Was that a 9/16" wrench or a 9MM wrench?

Theere are 2 bolts on the back of the fuel filter housing at the bottom that are 1/2" you'll need a long (9") extension and and good ratchet as these are under pretty decent torque to remove them. Also the banjo bolt is a1 1/4" bolt if Im not mistaken and you cant get completely on it witht the turbo in place so youll need an open end wrench to do it and grab as much as you can. I beleive the "control" uses a 9/16" wrench.
Excellent Post. I have a fuel leak under the bowl. I just finished the pump and accumulator and the 3 hoses. All from the back of the motor(e450). Your post will help when I tackle removing everything from the front to get to the fuel bowl. Its an e450 and that fuel bowl is right under the bulkhead of the firewall.
My profile posting rules still say that I can't post attachments. How does one get that ability?
WOW! that was a great right up!
I do have a question about 1 thing. In picture 2 you are pointing at a vacuum switch. What does that switch do and do we need it? (mine is not connected)
Thanks for pointing me here pjwoolw!
