I haven't tried using 4WD mode in a while, but I'm pulling 2 codes:
P1876 Transfer Case 2-Wheel Drive Solenoid Circuit Failure
P1832 Transfer Case Differential Lock-Up Solenoid Circuit Failure
when 4WD fails to work, try manually engaging the hubs. If that worked, then its a vacuum problem to the hub solenoid or the solenoid itself. I had this problem and it was the solenoid (part # tC3Z9H465A).
I'll look at it this coming weekend, but how much did that set you back? How did it fail? I started reading some docs and the first thing they suggest was the wiring or burned contacts on the solenoid circuit
Aquaman, my reply probably does not apply to your problem, since your truck threw codes indicating a transfer case issue. I was replying to the original poster. My issue was fixed with extended warranty. I had the same issue with my 2003 F250, also fixed with warranty.
BTW it's easy to lock hubs manually so its a good thing to try if 4WD fails to engage. BTW I had just driven onto the sand at Pismo (with 4WD engaged, I thought) when I got stuck. Very embarrassing. I started digging out when I thought about manually locking hubs and when I did the truck, thankfully, moved on with no problem.

I tried this the other day, could'nt see the PS tire-pretty sure (only by feel) when my hubs are in AUTO and xfer is in 4x4High the front wheels are not getting power. I can feel the xfer is in a lower range. Rear fishtailing up the hill of snow and the front not pulling, same in 4x4Low.
I turned the hubs to LOCK and both axles were powered in HIGH and LOW
Just an update from my end... I went through the checklist of stuff in the repair manual.
First test was to see if the solenoid valve works by grounding the left-most and right-most connector pins while the ignition was on. Yup, the valve clicks each time and the vacuum pump in front of the driverside firewall started pumping as long as I had it grounded (valve open). Does that mean a vacuum leak?
Connections appear all good, but I must be blind or I can't find the 4x4 control box to test the connections between it and the valve...
