Puffs Smoke Like a Steam Locomotive

Well, I just brought home my new to me 2003 6.0 PSD 250 the other day, next morning started her up, got her warmed up and took a ride on the highway. Everytime I accelerated the truck would buck and make a strange engine noise that coincided with large puffs of black smoke that came out like a steam locomotive. From everything I read here and from what the dealer told me when I went back ranting points to injector problems. Truck is now going on its second day in the shop and am awaiting results from the Ford dealer. Any ideas on any OTHER reasons this could happen? Trying to educate myself as best as possible and have been reading as many posts as possible. Thanks in advance!

Congrads on your new truck. Possible checks are EGR, Injectors, turbo vains opening and closing properly, H2O in the fuel.

Thank you, not off to a great start with it. Had it home for less than 24 hours before it went back. It only has 41,000 miles but I know its been sitting on their lot for quite awhile. Could the fact that it was sitting for an extended period of time cause the injectors to clog.

If anything is "clogged" it would be the EGR valve. Usually the culprit in the symptoms you described.

Update, I stopped by the dealer and they told me there replacing one of the turbo fans. They say it was warped or bent. Why do I seem not to confident?

A 6.0L that sits to long will have "Lot Rot." This is where the vanes in the turbo will rust and become stuck and can display the symptoms you described. Some brand new 6.0L's that were purchased had to have new turbos due to them sitting at the lot to long and the vanes rusting up.

When I went to pick up the truck this is exactly what they told me. Thank you for your post as it has put my mind at ease.

I sure hope so, since I'm new to diesels I can't even imagine having 150k on an engine. Seems to be running soooo much better now.

150k Miles are not a big deal, the enging is rated for 400K + before rebuild.

If you take care of it

Not to worry. When I test drove my truck the turbo vane controller groaned and rattled for about 10 seconds one time. It was the only potential "deal breaker" I found. I read on here what the problem could be and had the answer before the dealer had figured it out. They said the same thing. Vanes slightly stuck due to sitting. A very common problem.

Well it's been almost 3 months and 6,000 miles with no further issues. Truck has 76,000 and runs great.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy yours as much as I am enjoying mine.

I feel your pain. I just bought an 04, had it a week and it already needs a motor.

Now that sucks, you still in warranty? My motor, turbo and egr cooler have all been here for the life of the truck, 220k km's. It is in getting the tranny overhauled right now though, putting in a heavier duty torque converter as well as a transgo shift kit. I'm not in warranty obviously which kind of sucks but at the same time its better since I'm upgrading the parts now.

What is wrong with the motor that it needs to be replaced?

yea, that is what I am wondering. Most states have a "implied" warranty of 15 days if bought from a dealer.
