I had my 350 in for inspection today, and it passed safety but failed emissions real bad. CO and HC were both about 3x the limit. The cat is new, and so is the O2 sensor. I'm going to check timing and for any vacuum leaks, but otherwise where should I start?
Just checked timing, it was at 0 deg, I took a guess and set it at 8 btdc, it idles a bit better. (Edit: a simple search shows that it should be 10deg btdc, so this means it was 10deg off. I'll fix that tomorrow.) Checked for vacuum leaks, none found. The cap and rotor don't look great, so I'll get a new set, might as well get wires too. How can I verify the EGR is operating?
Alright, I'll check into that tomorrow. I replaced the plugs (which were pretty loose), wires (laying on the exhaust manifold), and cap&rotor tonight. In doing that I found a possible vacuum leak as well. I'll have to get pictures of that though, it's 2 wires going to a little canister (about the size of the IAC's) that has what looks like a vacuum tee on the end of it. Not real sure what it is, but one side was plugged and the other was open, so it's not really in the vacuum system but looks like it should be, beings as it has wires going to it.
Ok, just pulled the codes. I'm getting code 34 "PFE or EVP circuit above the closed limit of 0.67 volts." and code 83 "EGR Control solenoid circuit failure." So it appears they all point at the EGR, correct? I'm going to go check out that system now.
Ok well I just tried to test drive it, and it's running worse than ever. It shudders fairly bad when accelerating, I'm really confused at this point.
EDIT
Nevermind that, just went to check the obvious and found that you should never do a tune up while trying to finish a keg from a party last weekend. I had #3 and #6 reversed on the distributor. Just took it for a spin around the block and it's running great. Idle is still not perfect, but it's a bit better. Timing is right at 10deg, and this truck really is a rocket. I don't really know where to start wit the EGR and it's real cold outside, so I'll wait for suggestions from you guys and get back on it tomorrow. I connected the purge valve from the casister to the PCV valve, it says you can do that in the Haynes book, and I had a port that was easy to get to. Thanks for the help so far

Reason: Me being stupid
Found a vacuum leak, and why my heater controls didn't work. The supply hose for the cab had a cut in it, replaced the hose and now my heater controls work. So that was a leak. Checked the EGR, and it's not open at idle. Idle is good now. The cat I put on is a Catco, I've had one on my F150 for years and it's been fine. I don't know about this one though, it's making noises. Does not sound good. I'm not sure about that, it wasn't exactly cheap. Here is what it is: Catco 9007 - Catco Universal Catalytic Converters - summitracing.com. The air injection is hooked up to go in right before the cat, I tee'd the stock lines into 1, didn't think it would be a problem.
It's getting there. Here's what I want to do first though, I think I'm going to drop the exhaust and take a look in the cat tomorrow. If it still looks good, I have another cat laying around that is rated up to 5.9L that I could put behind that one. I don't really understand the ratings on these things but how could another cat hurt? How does that sound?

now your sounding like a tree hugger.... hahaha
im just joking, but another cat will possibly make it quiter though....
Well, I'm going to go out and look at it now, but you can already hear this thing from about 1/2 mile away , so a bit quieter wouldn't hurt anyways. A straight through glasspack and 3.5" tailpipe on a 460 isn't really a muffler....
