I made an insert that goes inside my receiver hitch. Used a ~14" piece of 2" box tubing drilled a hole in it for the hitch pin, then welded a short length of 1" flat bar on the bottom with (2) 3/8" holes in it for the lights. Capped the end. I used 2 4 or 5" utility lights. I then grounded the lights to the insert itself which is grounded to the truck thru the receiver. I wired them to the reverse circuit with a quick disconnect plug so I can pull it out easily.
Works awesome and can be removed/installed in about 2 seconds.
It makes you wonder. Since everyone seems to have the same issue (poor illumination from the factory backup lights) why the manufacturers don't do something about it? Or at least offer better lights as an option..
It appears to me that there is an error in the relay wiring diagram above.
The wire that goes off to ground from the switch shouldn't be there.
As it is wired, the switch flipped one way will turn on the aux back-up lights.
Flipped the other way, it just blows the fuse.
Of course, if that's the intent, then go for......

If that's a double throw switch, then you're right. I'd hazard a guess that it's a lighted switch, and the purpose of the ground is to provide for the light?
GregsSD,
How did you get the panel belowl the steering columb off to gain access to the upfitter pigtails? Also are there pass through wires in the harness to the under hood area?
Thanks for any help

Take the cover off to gain access to your fusepanel, then unbolt the fusepanel (4 small bolts) and it will pull away from the dash just enough to give you access behind it.
Yes there are 4 pass-thru wires also just behind the fusepanel.

If you have a 2008-09 you dont have to drop the fuse panel. The wires are located just above the E-brake pedal.
Thanks to all for the help. This site is great with the help that members contributite. I installed the factory replacement fog lights without removing the bumper. I bought them for about $60 delivered. All upfitter wires and the pass through wires through the firewall were easy to access too. I've got the sealed beam headlamps and changed them to Silverstars and with the fog lights, Wow what lights I have now.
