Just curious, I have seen some posts referring to having the mufflers removed as being illegal. I asked the guy who did mine and he said that it wasn't. The cat is stock and was not touched, everything in cat back. I guess it could depend on where you live. I am in Colorado Springs. Thanks for any info, Levi

Check with your state inspection station. Any service shop that does state inspections can tell you. Laws vary from state to state. In PA, it is illegal to run without mufflers. Some towns also have noise ordinances too.
it is illegal not to have mufflers in WV, i got inspected last month and i was very lucky, i pulled in the garage and the rumble was unbelievable it got everyones attn. the first thing he said was "does this thing have mufflers", i said yes its that new flowmaster american thunder system, but he gets down checks anyway, i was lucky because he was looking for a muffler so hard he must have forgot to check that both my cats were gone lol

In most places its illegal, but no matter what state you live in if your out in the boonies like me, no one will care. They will be happy just to get the money to inspect your vehicle. I have straitpipes on my truck and it has passed for a long time...
here in new jersey not only is it illegal to run no mufflers, any vehicle that is newer than 1975 is mandated to run cats. Its a real joke here. Heck they failed me one time for running the summit racing brand turbos!!!! go figure...and they are QUIET
regards
Ben
I do know that there are quite a lot of trucks that weighed enough even into the late seventies that were built from Ford without cats, so where do they fall in New Jersey's emissions checklist? I have a 1976 F100 that came with a smog pump only without cats from Ford. It even has a Non Catylist sticker in the door jamb. It would be pretty hard to convince someone like me to put them on a vehicle that never had them. They way I understand the emissions laws is that the vehicle has to meet the specs of the year of manufacture and be equipped with equipment that meets the original specs.
i'm from iowa and no one really cares out here supposedly it's not illegal as long as you keep the cat(s), i've got none and neither do many other people i know...must depend on the state
Most newer vehicles have so much restgriction in just that cats alone that you can remove the mufflers and notice little differance. We put a straightpip on my dads '88 club wagon it's just loud enough to hear but not loud enough to cause a distubance.
