Has anyone ever replaced the seals in their power steering pump? I've got a re-seal kit and I can't figure out how to get the pump apart. I have the reservoir off and that's as far as I've gotten. I thought I'd ask before I broke something important, although I do have a spare (it leaks too) in case something does go wrong.
I hate to double post, but wanted to give an update. There's a big snap ring that holds the pump in the housing, with a small hole to push the snap ring out of the groove. I got the pump mostly apart but now there's another piece seemingly stuck in the housing. I can see a bellville washer underneath it, but it seems pressed into the housing. Anyone have any ideas?
The gear on the end of the shaft has a lot of play where it engages the pump rotor and looks worn. Should there be any slop here? I may end up taking my other pump apart too since it might have a few less miles on it.
Thanks for looking, quicklook. I finally got it apart. The o-rings were stuck on the inner-most piece, and a few gentle taps with a hammer got it freed and out of the pump. I wish I had a digital camera so I could post some pictures.
Thats a good deal. I got a set from Oreilly and it was $25. Never took mine all the way apart though, just replaced the shaft seal and reservior o-rings. Mine was nice and quiet, just leaked out of that shaft seal.
EPNCSU2006, I need to replace the reservoir on mine and I can't even get the high pressure hose off. the 5/8 fitting in the 15/16 fitting is so tight it won't budge. Once/if I do get the 5/8 fitting off, how do you get the 15/16 fitting off the side so you can pull the reservoir off?
Ireallylikefords, I took the pressure line out a long time ago when I swapped my leaking pump for one that wasn't leaking at the time, but best I can remember, I just used either an open end wrench or an adjustable. Is the pump still in the truck, or do you have it out already? The newer trucks used a compression fitting on the pressure hose and my 87 was set up with an o-ring fitting, so I had to swap the big fitting to the newer pump for the pressure line to match.
Mine was nice and quiet, just leaked out of that shaft seal.
The original pump, like yours, was quiet just leaking from the shaft seal. It was much quieter than the pump I got off a 94, so I'm re-sealing the original one from my truck. The kit is just a re-seal kit so it only has the o-rings and shaft seal. It didn't come with any replacement wipers (don't know the correct term for them) or anything like that.
EPNCSU2006, Thanks for the reply. I have mine out of the truck and in the vise at the moment. It's actually out of my 86 so the pulley and bracket is a little different than yours but the reservoir and pump are the same. So is the big fitting pressed in or is it threaded? I'm afraid that once I get it out I won't be able to get it back in.
The big fitting is threaded into the pressure port in the pump. Once it is out, twist gently on the reservoir and it will slide off the back of the pump. The parts guy said the reservoirs tweak fairly easily and won't seal if they do, so take your time and don't force anything. Although you said the reservoir was the issue on yours, so you may not have any worries.
EPNCSU2006, thanks for the advice. I'm gonna go out there and try to get that out again. I broke the nipple off the reservoir so i got another reservoir at the junkyard and wanted to put that on. Hopefully my old O ring on it will seal. Well I hope you find more info that you're looking for. Thanks again for the info.
EPNCSU2006, I got that big fitting outta there like you said and pulled the broken reservoir off and put the good one on! The O rings looked good so I'm just gonna take my chances with them and reseal it if need be now that I know how to take that sumbitch apart! The reservoir only cost 3 bucks so I fixed it for that much instead of having to buy a new pump! Thanks so much for the advice!
I'm glad I could help! I think I got mine figured out as well. I just have to run everything through the parts washer at work, put it back together and swap it out for the one currently in the truck and I should be back in business.
