256 y block

Pulled apart my 55 F-100 272 with g heads and both were cracked, left side was there for a while. My question is on a 256 Mercury I found.

Was wondering if my crank from the 272 will work in the 256 Merc making it a 272 again with the longer displacement? The casting letters were EBY and the heads had a 4 barrel manifold on it, though someone adapted a 2 barrel carb. Can this block be punched out to a 292 standard like the 272?

Couldn't get to the head letters but from my research looks like it came out of a 54 Merc with a 4 barrel. Has a monster looking auto trans hooked to it now, I have a 3 speed w/od that came with my truck I run.

My 272 with the ECZ-G heads, stock ignition and 2 barrel, ran pretty good and I did not want to do all this work and end up with any less performance. Was going to run a newer 4 barrel and distributor on it, and stock manifold and heads ( looks like they are EBY to). Is it worth all the trouble, or should I just go get some good G heads?

Welcome to the site, sorry, but I don’t have any first hand experience with your problem, have you posted your question in the Y block form;

To answer your last question, and just my personal opinion, it’s probably not worth the effort, just get new heads, also (and please don’t take this wrong), the y block has some inherent design limitations over newer types but of course it’s your money.

Yes, you can stroke the 256 to 272. Or, for a few more dollars, you can stroke it to 283 by having a 312 crank turned down to fit the engine.

You can sometimes bore a 272 to a 292.

You might find the casting numbers on the EBY heads on the side of the head between the exhaust ports.

If that were my engine, I'd run the 256 as-is. Maybe locate a Carter WCFB or a Rochester 2G or 2GC to fit the intake manifold.

Thanks for the reply. Been finding so much other stuff that is interchangeable on y blocks, thought I'd ask. Looking for some good g heads locally.....still.
