Is the junkyard the best place to get all the filter parts. I have a rectangle shaped one that says visteon on it. I would like to go back to the factory one.
Got 95k on my OEM filter. Filter minder has not hit the first mark yet! However, I'm going to change out my thermostat and install the upgraded fuel pressure regulator spring tomorrow so I'm going to go ahead and change out the air filter while I have it out.
I wanted to add a cross reference to the 6.0 air filters that are available .
Also, there is a difference between the OEM blue media and white media. The blue media suspends dust better and offers longer service intervals compared to white media however it will cost a little more.

The blue media is a synthetic water repellant fiber. Stay with the factory, Donaldson/Motorcraft filter if you value your turbo.
I've taken my filter in and out a lot and never removed anything but the filter. Undo the clamps. Pull the 2' rubber hose out of the way. Pull the front piece back as far as possible. Work the rear piece lose and back until it's back far enough and lift the filter out. Reverse to reinstall. Make sure the tabs on the bottom are in place.
I remove the finger snaps completely and put them somewhere. I didn't once and had to dig it out of the bowels of the engine with a magnet.
This site rocks! I am a basic mechanical novice and through the above links I changed mine on the first try in less than 5 or 6 minutes.....
Kudos to all the knowledgeable that are wanting to share tips and techniques

Just replaced the OEM Air filter (dated April of 2005) after 8 years of service with less than 65k mi. on the clock.
The filter minder never moved ( I guess it didn't need to).
I decided to weigh the new filter on a scale and compare it to the old filter to identify just how much dirt has accumulated in the past 8 years. To my surprise it had trapped just 6.2 ounces of debris.
The fresh FA-1778 filter cartridge weighed in at 59.22 ounces (1,689 grams) ( with this reference weight as a comparison, it may help you guys know how much has accumulated in you air filter.)
So ten years or so from now, I guess I'll be checking it again.
Nice to see how an expert does it. But I gotta wonder, if you are supposed to take all that plumbing loose, why did they do us the huge favor of putting finger clamps on the element?
For those of you with slower internet connections, that video is 39 megs. You might want to right click on it and download it to your desktop before trying to view it. It didn't want to stream for me at DSL speeds.
Do you know if they make the "upfitter" kit for a 2004 model? Great info you have posted.
