I am getting a little bit of yellow fluid forming and dripping off the top of the AC Compressor where the flexible tube is crimped to the fixed tube. The leak is very slight and just seems to make the tubing slightly wet. The AC still works fine. I take it this is some kind of oil in the compressor system. Anyone run into this issue before? Will re-crimping the connection solve the problem, or will this be something for a trained AC mechanic to deal with? What may happen if I just ignore the problem?
You are losing freon and what sounds like dye from the crimp connection. You need to replace that line. An A/C tech will pull the freon out of your system (recapture), replace the line, pull a vacuum on the system, and them recharge it with freon. You should lose very little oil if any.
Before having the work done check with your local parts stores and price the line, then check with the A/C shop and get a price break down for everything. It may be cheaper to purchase the line yourself and then have the A/C shop do the work.
You also might ask at the parts store who in your area does A/C work on the side, alot of A/C techs do small jobs like this on the side to make extra money and charge alot less than a shop does.
Thanks plowhand, I will look into it. I have a geo-thermal heating system in my house that I built using commercial refrigeration compressors and have a friend who does commercial HVAC work, he has the tools to do the freon end of the work for me, I will just need to get a new line crimped on. I will talk to him to see if he can do the work and I will get a price from the one auto shop in town who is competent. In life there always seems to be one more thing that needs fixing...
