Hi everyone, just bought a 1999 f 150 pretty cheap with a 4.2 motor that wont turn over, the guy i bought it from said he was driving down the road at 30 kmh when it just died.he took it to a garage and the mechanic took the belt off and tried to turn the crank and it wont budge, now i have been reading thru the other posts and cant find the same problem as i have,it is a hi mileage truck (300,000 km) any help would be great i am a mechanic by trade (heavy equipment) so i will be doing the work myself, thanks
They have head gasket issues that can lead to hydrolocking but I can't imagine it would shut the engine down while it was running.
The 4.2 has never had head gasket issues. It is the lower intake gaskets that fail and allow coolant to fill the cylinder/cylinders,thus causing hydrolock!
There are plenty of threads on hydro-locking and the damage it causes.
Get a 2000 or later engine.
Since you know how to wrench, I suggest doing what I did and finding a used engine. I was able to find a used 2000 4.2 for 500 bucks from a wreck.
WARNING:
When removing the bad 4.2, take LOTS of digital pictures of the lines and wiring and external accessories. The 2000 engine I used had different injectors (at the harness connector) and other external parts than the 1997 I replaced. The parts swapped easily enough, but get a complete engine with harnesses if possible. If you pull the injectors don't knock off the plastic "tips", pull straight out. Use new O-rings when reinstalling.
It wasn't bad to remove. Gearwrenches are your friend so if you don't have a metric set this is a good excuse to get them.
