Do you have Remote Keyless Entry? When you say the courtesy lights work, do you mean the ones in the door panels or the map lights at the dome lamp? Do any lights come on when you open the doors? If you check the dome lamp socket with a test lamp or a voltmeter, is there any voltage to a good ground?
The dome lamp gets it's power from that relay in the fuse panel. The relay grounds through the Generic Electronic Module. If the GEM is bad, the relay will not close to provide power to the dome lamp. After looking at the wiring diagram, it looks like the main light switch turns on the dome light by grounding the GEM. I am guessing that the GEM is bad. It plugs in to the back side of the fuse panel under the steering wheel.
Perhaps you can get one from the junkyard to test this.
It was a balmy 30 degrees today so I got a chance to work on the truck. I opened up the dome light and the bulb appears to be good. I'll try replacing it, but I can't get to the dealership until Wednesday.
Any suggestions on what next?
Here's what I've found so far.
1: The bulb appears to be good
2: The fuse appears to be good
3: The courtesy lights come on
4: The cargo light does not come on
5: The dome light cannot be manually turned on via the dimmer switch
My 99 f250 had the same issue with the dome light working and then not working and/or coming on all by itself in the middle of the night.
The sensor or switch for that dome light is located in the latch on the door (the parts that actually latch the door shut) These parts are greased from the factory and over time the switch becomes dirty. I simply flushed the latch mechanism with WD 40 until it was dripping from teh bottom of the door, work the lach a few times by opening and closing the door, and wallah - the dome light worked properly once again.

Right now I've figured out that my third brake light and dome light and cargo lights don't work. I think it may be a wiring issue at this point. Either way I'll bring it in to a pro mechanic when I get a chance and some cash. I'm electrically challenged so I figure I'll let them replace my power mirror switch while they're at it. And I've already broken one mirror trying to put it in so I'll let them try to install those too. That way if they break one they can buy it.
Figure anything out on this yet? I'm having a the same problem with my 03 Crew Cab Lariat 7.3 .. Dome lights do not work when door is opened or when you roll the dial switch on the dash, the Cargo light do not come on either, bulb in it is fine. Also, on the door courtesy lights the passenger side stays on all the time... the driver side has a burnt bulb.. going to replace that tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem with the other side staying on all the time. I haven't looked at the fuse box yet. I'll post back up what happens.
Well I got some little 194 bulbs and replaced the burnt out bulb on the drivers side door courtesy light... now they are both working like they should. However my dome and cargo light are still not working... I checked the fuse panel and everything looked good there, no burnt fuses. I can turn on the dome light by the toggles on the actual dome light, but neither it or the cargo light comes on when the door is opened, or you rotate the dial/dimmer switch on the dash. I'll keep at it and let you know what I get figured out...

Thanks! Does your third brake light work? The one mounted on the cab.
Sorry been out of pocket... I got my dome light working, turns out that the problem was at the bulb. Not the bulb itself but the clamps the you push it into. One of them was not making contact.. be it was just barely off and I did not even notice it the first time I took the cover off.. anyway I squeezed the together so they would clamp tighter and wallah. I'm in business with the dome light now, but not sure if I like it.. I hate it how when you turn the key off the dome light comes on.. I also have an 05 Jeep Rubicon and it does the same thing. So I might just pull the bulb on the Ford.
As far as the cargo light and 3rd brake light, I'll check that out this evening and post back up.
I have a roof mounted DVD system put in for the kids in the back seat and they had to remove my dome light. Unfortunately the DVD unit does not have an Autolight when the door opens, So I bought thes LED lights to meake a new dome light between the visor. Basically what I need to know is where is the best place to hook into the kight system so they come on when the doors are opened?
Is that even possible or can I only hook it into the light switch on the dash?

Any help would be great.
Thanks

The wire(s) you need should still be inside the headliner. I doubt that those who installed the DVD unit completely removed the wire for the dome light.

Can you still get at the wiring for the original dome light?
I would use that for the power for your new lights.

My 3rd Brake light did not work, it was the bulb. Also the Cargo lights did not work either... First bulb I checked was fine, but the second was no good. I guess when one goes out the other does too. So now all my interior lights and outer cab mounted lights are working. Good luck on getting yours going!

THANK you for the info. I'll open up all the lights and pull the bulbs next time I see the truck. Then I'll replace em all once I get time to run to the stealership.
