Dumb Question #4 - Small Dash Vent

What is the purpose of the very small vent (4 slots) molded into the plastic dash immediately to the left of the adjustable height pedal switch and "cubby hole"? Nothing is connected to it on the backside.

Do you have the automatic climate control system? If so, that vent should have a tube with a small sensor inside connected to it. It's used to sense the cabin air temperature to control the heater / air conditioner output.
