I have an '04 FX4 crew with a vent problem. The air seems to always come out of the dash vents. Some air does come through the other vents when selected, but the dash vents seem to be wide open constantly. The fan speeds and the temp control are both ok.
Does that have Auto ac (digital) or manual (*****). Could be your recirculating (outside air) door stuck. Auto A/C has blend door actuators that go bad.
It has manual controls. If I turn it to the off position the air does stop, but the dash vents open no matter which vent setting is selected. The other vents do open when selected, but it the majority of the air still comes out of the dash.
Hot/cold and fan speeds work fine.
Are you saying the vents in view open by themselves? If so then i say you need new vents registers. Easy to replace and not that pricey.
No, sorry about that. The registers are fine. I'm talking about the actual air output. When the system is turned on, I have a constant air flow coming through the dash vents, more so than the actual vents that are selected. The floor and defrost vents do have some air flow when they're selected, but the majority of the air still comes through the dash. The temp and fan speed controls both function fine, even to the dash vents.
I know if there is no vacuum at all the defrost is the default setting. But, is there another vacuum line or actuator that would cause a constant air flow to the dash vents?
I do beleive that the recirculating door is controlled electrically, that might be the suspect. Your reciirculating option is a push button below the A/C controls.
Did the truck just start doing this? I'd suspect something having fallen down thru the defrost ducts. My own truck heater box was full of pencils and pens when I got it. When I got the box out, it was also full of leaves, dirt, and general eyucch. Works like new after a good cleaning.
