My truck has a c6 and 4:10 gears so obviously not a speed demon. The trans has a very worn front band, and you have to let the truck run 1-2 min before moving even warm or the trans will slip. So after the trans dies I want to swap in a zf behind the 7.3. Hopefully for better mileage 9 mpg right now. and to make the truck better for the highway. What all will I need to do the swap? Any advice would be appreciated.
Assuming it is a 2x tranny flywheel 2 ways to go here trans does have to be from a 7.3 complete pedal assembly hydraulic clutch components possibly crossmember and I would get the driveshaft from the donor just in case. And the floor board center and shifter boot.
If I missed (probably did) somebody speak up.
If fuel mileage is and driveability is what your after I would look for a donor truck with a ZF5 and 355 rearend.
If you have the room and capabilities in my experiance it is cheaper to buy a donor and get rid of it when you are through wiyh the swap even if you give it away compared to buying the components required.

Major flash back. Thats the same drive train that my truck had when I bought it. Same fuel economy too...although there was nothing wrong with my transmission.
Not sure how hung up you are with the manual swap, but an alternative is to put 3.08 gears in there (only works if you have a 2wd). You would still have to have the transmission fixed though. Getting a flywheel for the ZF can drive the cost of the project up unless you have access to a used one, but that can also lead to problems. The ZF5 speed uses a dual mass flywheel that can fall apart eventually and a used one could be a gamble.
I also suspect you could have a drain back problem in the transmission. If thats the case, a rebuild is not needed.
