oil change
would the check engine light come on if the truck was overdue for an oil change?

1999 expedition 5.4

I agree with the above. You have something else going on for the CEL to come on, like a misfire, bad O2 sensor, COP issue, etc. If you have an Auto Zone nearby, they will scan your computer and tell you why the CEL is on and what the problem is.
