I live in tucson, (80 miles north of the border) these babies get stolen all the time, here is what I have done and so far has worked. Knock on wood. Realize most thieves don't want to spend more than 60 seconds hot wiring and stealing your rig.
1) Installed a cheap alarm off of ebay, nothing special but if a door or the hood is opened it goes off. Not really to get other peoples attention but my own if I can hear it.
2) Alarm kills spark to the coil. The engine will turn over but won't start (hopefully confusing the would be theif into thinking its broke). Relay that kills spark is set up in a failsafe mode such that the alarm has to be working for the truck to start, ie power to the relay or no spark.
3) Club on the steering wheel, I have seen how this does no real good, seconds to remove but every second counts I guess.
4) If I am really feeling insecure I'll pull the rotor. I drilled a small hole in it so it slips right on my keychain, hard to loose it that way. Still not a bad idea to hide a spare behind the seat just in case it cracks though.
The worst thing around here though is that if they want it bad enough they will just get a flat bed and load it up. Not really sure how to combat that one. This may be extreme but disposable cells are now cheap as heck. For a few bucks a month you can get basic service and most of them have GPS... Hide one hooked up the the battery and I bet someone has already written a program to pull the GPS cord. off the phone remotely. Cheap low jack.
A way to combat the flat bed thing is to maybe get some VERY large chain, make a way to secure it to the frame that won't come easy unless in a shop up on a lift, and chain it to a telephone pole or the like.
the only way anti theft devices work is if they are activated or used by the owners. if they are too complicated, people won't take the time to arm them.my good friend had his truck stolen out of a parking lot in daylight,he was away from it for only 30 minutes. he didn't set his alarm,or put on his steering wheel club. the truck was never found.he learned his lesson the hard way. most theives are oppertunists, that are for the most part lazy.if its quick and easy they will try to get away with taking it. so if they are looking to steal ,and they feel the time it takes to get something is to long, they will move on to the next,or easier score. of course this is not always the case, and if your the specific target, they will keep trying.
as far as the kill switch goes, i have a floor pedal switch that can be hidden under the carpet so that you can access it and not advertise it to people that never been in the truck.
