What is the HPOP resevoir, and how often do you need to drain it?
Some pull the oil out of the HPOP resevoir when changing oil, most of us don't. You don't have to, but the oil don't seem to circulate like it should. The resevior it that silver looking thing that sits on top front of the engine. Rectangle in shape.
I did my first oil change in my 2002 F350 today and used the Rot 5 w 40 syn. A bit more expensive that the 5 quarts that my Jeep Grand Wagoneer uses! I still have a small oil leak coming from the vent right behind the oil pan, looks to be an inspection cover or something between the engine and the tranny. Everything else is bone dry. Any ideas?
Very common place for the leak to show up. Probably coming from the top side of he engine. Get on top and look down in the valley with a good light. I'm guessing you'll have some oil in there that finds it's way to the back of the engine and out the cover plate. High pressure oil lines are a common place for leaks.
I would guess turbo pedestal O-rings, EBPV arm, or just the oil seepage from the boots under the intake spider from the CCV. How many miles on that truck? My '02 was dripping oil down the back of the engine because of the CCV. If you want to solve that, do the CCV mod and clean the engine bay real good. Just use Simple Green and regular water pressure from your garden hose -- nothing too high like a pressure washer. Cover the alt & PS pump cap with plastic bag or something. Might take a few times spraying & rinsing, but when you're done, you'll have a clean engine to start tracing the leak if it's not the CCV.
2002 F350 crew cab, 7.3 PSD, Lariat package, sprayed in bed liner, stock wheels and tires, Bushwacker Fender flairs, and some kind of aftermarket tailights that went away real quick, 44K on the odo when I got it, bought from original owner. Paid 15K two months ago. Too much, too little, or just right?
Sounds like a pretty good price to me. Especially since these trucks are getting a bit harder to find.
I would suggest as Izzy & Barry said. Inspect the top of the engine in the valley for oil. Then wash it off with simple green to get everything cleaned up and make it easier to find the leak.

4x4 or 2wd if it is a 4x4 you got a killer deal even if it is a 2wd thats still a good deal.
I paid 18K out the door for my 2000 lariat with 128K on her November 07.
Yeah, leave it to me. I finally buy a diesel truck (2002 XLT 2WD CC SB) with 60k on it for $21k in Jan '07 after dreaming about it for 2 years. What happens?? Diesel sky-rockets and truck prices sink like a stone.
If I didn't love my truck so much, I'd be Pi$$ed!!
