starter keeps going out

Hey guys,
My starter went out for the third time. The whole engine was professionally rebuilt and i think they put the same starter back in. I took the starter in to
have it fixed. The Bendix spring broke again for the 3rd time. Is there a 12 volt version i can get that will hold up and last? if so can you point me to the site?
thanks.
Paul

The 6 volt starter should work just fine. I would look into the way the starter is mounted. There is a support bracket that runs from the top bolt on the rear of the starter to the one of the oil pan bolts. It may not look important but it keeps the starter straight and prevents it from spinning from torque. If this bracket is not there the starter could become cocked and causing the starter to bind on the flywheel slightly causing the spring to become stressed.

sounds like bob hit the nail on the head. if not, macs carries a modern bendix. have one in mine, works fine. just remember that if you go to 12 volt, you need more cca's to spin in cold weather.

Actually, you only need 1/2 the CCA at 12v. (Especially in Arizona!)

I'll tell you, besides the alternator on my flathead, the best thing I ever did for it was buy a gear-reduction starter. It lacks that puking-my-guts-out groan of the original, but is far easier on the battery, the flywheel, and everything else. It has a solenoid to engage the drive gear from the front of the flywheel, so there is none of that hanging up (after the third time that happened to mine in the winter, I had enough!). As a bonus, they weigh less than half of the stocker, not that it matters because I haven't had to do a thing to it in 5 yrs. Setting the stocker up in place, while keeping the end plates on and getting the long bolts started will give you the arms of a jabba-man in short order!

They have online catalogues as well. Sometimes there is more in the printed ones. But at least you can get a quick check if you need a part and compare prices without your desk looking like that of an encyclopaedia salesman!
