Hi guys I have a 78 f150 with a 300 I6 and sometimes when I let the clutch out or when I'm lugging around and putting a load on the engine at low rpms I hear a clicking noise. I'm pretty sure it isn't the clutch because i can push the clutch in and it won't make a noise. I don't know if it could be the valve train or what. Do you guys have any idea what it could be?
I've heard that noise too, and it's usually under a load, or when I'm really lugging the engine. I actually think it's some kind of exhaust noise, or valve click or something. Either way, as far as I know, that's just what a 300 sounds like when it's really lugging.

No it's not the carb I don't think. It kinda sounds like it might be valvetrain because it sounds like it is behind the firewall. It is not a light click either. It is distictive.
That sounds like spark knock. It goes away when you put the clutch in because you're taking the load off the engine. I bet it only happens at part-throttle?
Check your base timing, and that your EGR valve opens when you open the throttle at operating temp. With a '78, odds are a previous owner who thought he knew what he was doing disconnected it, or it's gotten old.
Yea I think its because our ******* governor put that ****ty ethanol in our gas here in oregon. In our snowmobiles and motorcycles we had to jet up. We'll turn the timing back to about 8 degrees and see if that fixes it. Thank you guys....
Turning the timing up (advanced) is only going to make the problem worse if it's spark knock. You need to check that your base timing is set to specification with a timing light.
