1987 bronco w 5.0L. I gave it to my dad and has been using it as a plow.
Yesterday reverse went out on him. The tranny fluid is brown, he said he hasnt been working it very hard in reverse tho and Im sure I had heated that tranny up a few times going through the rockies and had it shifting hard.
He said park reverse and nuetral all act the same. There are no horrible noises. The tranny will click through the gears all the way from back to 1st and back...except R doesnt engage.
I have no idea about how AODs operate so I dont even know where to begin troubleshooting before we assume its just roasted. So if anyone has any experience with an AOD tranny and can offer some places to start, please feel free to chime in.

When you drive it will it shift into 2nd and 4th gears? If not the sun gear has broken from the shell, time for a rebuild. I have seen this failure a few times, good one moment and broke the next.
If it will and the only thing is it has no reverse there could be a problem with the reverse servo, you can remove the valve body to repair or replace it.
If its ok the problem will be with the reverse band or reverse clutches, the trans will have to be removed and rebuilt.
Try putting the rear axle on some stands and disconnect the shift arm from the trans. and move the shift lever by hand, maybe the linkage is off a little. But w/ brown fluid thats probably friction material from your reverse clutch.
the trucks 1000 miles away so I will pass the info along. Dad get under the truck while mom went through all the gears to make sure it wasnt a problem with the linkage.
Im not one to say, however I dont see how it would be the friction material from the reverse clutch, I would be one to assume you would hear the two surfaces slipping which I think would make a noticeable sound?....from what I was told he didnt work it hard in reverse, but then again we've all seen some odd things happen with older fords lol.
Ill see what he says after I pass this info along.
Hoping for the best.
