My tranny will go into nuetural when Im coming to a slow stop...forward and reverse. not to often. it will do it several times a week in the morning when I back out of the garage to head to work.... more so since its been cold outside.
106K ...Ive heard the seals are getting hard will cause this.....its full of fluild and it loos good.
So....if this is whats goin on....do you guys recommend a tranny additive for this...say somthing from Lucas oils?
Does giving it gas finally get it to move? If so, it sounds like it will need to be rebuilt in the near future. Linkage would not cause this.
yes....what I do is put it in neutral and then back in drive and it goes right in gear. once the tranny is warm is ..it hasnt done this.
So what about additives like Lucas oil products??? or any other brand....are they worth using?
What ATF fluid was used? Synthetic or Conventional?
Weighing in on the options here...
Usually when warm, there is more slippage, versus being cold. The ATF won't slip by..so it may NOT be there servos, BUT the valve body.
Take it to a professional transmission mechanic and ask him what his judgement is, not a transmission chain. First words are " Its trashed or worn out or gonna grenade on you"..
Why you ask, because they are in the business of replacing transmissions, not offering sound advice.
The AOD suffered its fair shair of shame, but if the valves and spring's are worn, then you could slip by with just a new valve body and under $300. That's done professionally.
Any snake oil may cause more problems... Lucas is thick as molasses, so if it does it when it's cold, then its only gonna magnify the problem.
Mine started this a year ago. During winter it would go into neutral when you slowed down just after you started driving it. Once warmed up it was fine(few miles of driving). Once the weather started staying warmer it was fine. Had 160K miles on it. I'd done a service at 80K(when I bought truck) and again at 160K miles to see if it would help. Nope.
This seems to be a common issue with the AOD, my '90 did this for many years but I just learned to live with it. The problem didn't get significantly worse over time and the trans didn't appear to suffer any noticable wear.. once warmed up it shifted fine, it never slipped and the fluid didn't appear darkened. I also noticed that a slight fluid overfill helped reduce it some.
thanks a ton guys! ive had this truck for about 5 months. Dont know if the fluid has ever been changed but it looks good...nice red color. I can ask a few guys here in town about my tranny as Id never go to chain trans shop
I have a 69 Mustang with a C6 and it will do the same thing when the fluid gets low(from a leakie pan) so Ill add a tad more fluid to the AOD
Its only been like this since its been cold weather...month of January...once it warms up we'll be ok I appreciate the help!
