1979 Ford F150 Flareside 2wdr.
I just purchased this truck.A few day's ago I was crawlig around under the truck and discovered someone has welded the differential cover to the pumpkin. Why would someone do this?
Being a '79 half-ton, you can be rest assured that you have a 9" rear, unless some previous owner has changed it. Those are of the drop-out center section variety, as compared to an integral rear. Look at the front side of the diff...if you see 10 nuts, then you have a 9".
I thought everyone knew what a 9" rear looks like...but if you're like me, you haven't seen it all yet!
the most likely answer is your truck has a ford 9 " diff. no rear cover,it has a 3rd member or "drop out" carrier. so the front of the diff comes out at the pinion.this is done by removing the axles first.

Thank's for the info.
I was really pleased to to find out that it is a 9" rear end.
