ok, now here is the best information that i can find to answer your origonal question. i got this from a ford rep i know but you cant treat it as gold since i have nothing in writing....
Ford (and most all manufacturers) have the stereo's set up to handle 4 ohm speakers. the front speakers are 8-10 ohms(depending on model and years) so that the rear speakers are louder then the front ones to give the driver a more equal sound. putting aftermarket 4 ohm speakers up front will cause no damage to the radio system. the most you will notice is the front speakers are physically louder then they were before at the same given volume.
i have to get a low profile sub with a wedge box to fit behind my seat that is set all the way back in my regular cab. my buddy has an '06 f-150 supercrew with his sub mounted facing the floor under his rear seat. with a custom box would that possibly work for you coonhunterjoe?
c00n, I just put two 10s under my back seat and they sound great! Ill post some pics up soon of the box me and a buddy built. Ive been meaning to post some pics up but havent had a chance. Hopefully this weekend. It is a really clean install I thought and probaly the best/only way to do it keeping the back seat and using full size subs.
I don't think you'll have any issues with the new speakers connected to the old head unit. Does your truck have the regular factory sound system or the premium factory sound system? I believe that the premium system had an external amplifier. I'd still like to know what a cassette deck is though. Is this some sort of new Ipod accessory?
I got rid of a '92 Bronco a while back that the PO had actually formed up a fiberglass box, and mounted it underbody right under the rear seat. He then cut the floor out for a 12" sub. It was a very professional and leakproof install. If I were to need that type, I'd probably look at doing the same thing.
I thought about that too but couldnt bring myself to do that much cutting to my truck. Also If I were to ever wandt to sell it theres not that big of a chance someone will like 2 12 inch holes in the floor.
