I recently swapped out my original factory oem electronic radio for a like Lincoln electronic radio with 2 additional speaker outputs for rear speakers. I am keeping the two in the doors and running one to a speaker in the dash ( I think this speaker was used for CBs?). I have an additional speaker and was thinking about building a small box for it and placing under the center console below the ashtray somewhere. I have an extended cab so I'm not really able to place behind the seat. Just wanted to get some ideas on what others thought! Super excited because this tape deck works much better than the older one!!! Have some old AC/DC cassettes ready to go....
Installing speakers *****-nilly like that is going to absolutely kill the Stereo effect... I would seriously look into putting the back speakers in the back of the truck.
The center speaker was used when only an AM radio was installed; not sure about the CB, have never seen a factory installation of one of those.
In a vehicle where surround sound isn't needed (ie. Movies and such) you really only want a strong front stage. You will have a much better sound, if sound quality is important to you. Reason being is that when you place a speaker behind you that is playing the same frequency as one in front of you the sound hits you from different distances and angles (time for sound to travel blah blah). Best sound quality = strong front stage composed of a 2 or 3 way component speaker system.
If you must have the rear speakers put them in the back pillars of the truck. But honestly you'd be better off not using them at all.
What you want is to create as equal distance as possible from yourself to the speaker as possible. Hard to do in a vehicle, I know. I have an 85, but since my dash is from an 86 or 87, it has vent holes in it that don't go with my heating system, the plan I drew out for mine is going to use those as speaker and tweeter holes, I'll put a picture up showing where they are located on my dash, you could probably cut yourself some holes and do it like mine, plus that hole your talking about in the center is where I'm going to put a subwoofer, it's literally the perfect spot because there the sound waves bounce off the window and it creates a really nice effect. Take the speakers out of the door, speaker location was an after thought those years, pick up 2 speakers, 2 tweeters, 1 of each on each side and you'll have a great sound!
BTF, not to thread jack but I'd be curious to see your setup. My truck doesn't have dash vents either and actually just earlier today I was looking at the dash thinking that (where the vents would be) would be a perfect place for tweeters. I have a set of klipsch horn tweeters that will fit perfect, haven't figured out where to place my mid woofers yet tho.. as you said the door is a terrible place. Exposed to the elements, resonance between the two metal door sheets, etc. I just put buckets in my truck and have 22" width between them for a center console, planning on a single rear firing 15" dc audio sub with the console crap on top of the box.

That's ok, I can answer that with information that'll also help the op! Another decent location is in the kick panels, under the dash on the side, pop the panels out, cut out a hole and you have a place to put them. I just don't like the sound coming from underneath, I'd rather it come from more ear level, but if it's impractical for you guys to do that, the kick panels are probably the next best way to go! I'm getting ready to out and start doing some work on the truck, expect pictures in the next hour or so!
Yea I'll have to see what you're talking about with the woofers, I see room for tweeters on the dash but I can't see fitting a 6" mid driver up there too. Have fun, take lots of pics
Yeah, 6 inch speaker won't fit, if you wanted it on the dash, you would have to cut a hole in the dash pad and put them up top on each side, I've seen that done before too and it does look and sound cool, it's just hard to cut the hole, and if you screw up it cold cost ya lol
