I was just browsing on ebay and liked these. Item# 320327491210

I was thinking mounting them with the flames out rather than down and mounting them on the rear bed panel right below the tailgate with a snugged up rear bumper. I like LEDs and do the oval ones on the website Ax gave a link too, but I wish they had nice chrome bezels the rubber grommets look a little to utilitarian to me.

The ebay billet ones are a great price and look pretty nice too

I've too have been doing a lot of looking around for tail lights for my 49. A while back, before I owned the truck, i saw an add for a tail light with turn signals all in one assembly that would look pretty neat if it was put above the rear window. I know, that for my personal safety I would still want a tail lights on either side of the bed at the back of the truck as well, but having three tails lights with the turn signals up at window/eye level seems like a good idea to me...
Now I just need some luck to find that light assembly again.

I've thought of using the caddilac ones too in my roll pan. Here is a computer rendering of what they'd look like

IMHO the 59 caddy bullets look best frenched (recessed) to at least the top of the chrome trim, or better yet into a sloped area so the end of the tube is slashed at an angle the longer the slash the better. Otherwise to me they look stuck on and ready to break off. My problem with them is that I lived thru the era where every custom wannabe had them, so I got bored with them. I guess it's the time where what was old is new again.

I like em sticking out a bit. It gives the impression of flames shooting out.

Here are some good examples of frenching lights. And for you Ford fanatics here are some early ford lights being used on a cheby.

2000 Chevy S10 - Custom Tailgate - Frenched Tail Lights - Roll Pan | Sport Truck Magazine Article at Automotive.com

tail light lens material - Part 2

I think this is what AX is talking about as far as setting the depth of the Caddy tail lights in the french.

Yes, that's the idea with or without the raised rolled edge. My design sensibilities and training says that any details should look like they have a reason to be there, and the best designs are where an action is accompanied by a reaction.
