Last visit 12-17 to discuss possible injector replacement.
Diagnostics suggested before lots of money for inj's, IDM and possible harness. Error code from local Ford delaer is P-0605, PCM memory failure.
I suspect faulty CPS again, since PCM AND CPS replaced this year. PCM never programmed when installed. Dealer also asked to have Bully Dog chip removed as it "interferes" with diagnostics. Help!?! Thanks. (I may also be looking for a "real" Powerstroke mechanic in RI/CT area.)
What kind of problems are you having with your truck? The grey CPS's have been known to cause problems with the #8 cyl and another one on occasion (#3 IIRC). The Bully Dog does tweak the signals the computer sees, so it could very well be interfering with the diagnostics. I'd take it off for now and try to get your truck back to normal before putting it back in (or getting a DP tuner like others will suggest).
Stalling intermittently, (CPS sensor replaced twice this year.)
Gray CPS in now. No faulty "balance" code showing up.
Loss of MPG 17 avg to 12.
PCM replaced this year, not re-programmed.
Bully Dog sent back to Texas for re-flash after new PCM.
Going to dealer now to return Bully Dog back to "stock" code so mechanic can take home and try to stall.
Replaced #3 injector.
Most work done by 30 year International mechanic, not savvy to electronics.
(Probably didn't need to replace #3.) Thanks!!!
You're right Rich. P0603 is the most common one we see with a chip/tuner, but the 0605 does occasionally show up.
All Diesel. Give us some more info if you would. What year is your truck, and which PCM code did they put in? How does the truck act when it stalls? Is it a cough, buck, jerk, or is it more like someone just turned the key off? Does it always start right back up after the stall? Do any of your dash lights act funny when this is happening? Has the Ford dealer run any diagnostic tests, or just read the codes?
The contribution fault codes will only show up after running a KOER cylinder contribution test.
2000 F-350 Dually, 140K miles, ext cab, 6sp manual, 7.3, 4 X 4.
Don't know PCM programming.
Stalling - like turning key off and right back on. No dash indication. No strange
dash/gauge response. Usually warm. Acceleration or hi-way speed.
Diagnostics tonight or tomorrow. I reset Bully Dog back to "stock" tonight at dealer. They couldn't get parameters with BD programmed.
Mileage average dropped from 17MPG to 12 in less than month.
Thanks
Check for any loose battery connections or grounds, check the big wiring harness over the drivers side valve cover to see if the wires are chaffed from rubbing against the valve cover or on the metal bracket behind the square box with the bolt in the middle of it, check the connection at the CPS (or the CPS itself) for your stalling issue.
For mileage issues, check the 6 boots on the intercooler tubes and intake plenum, then inspect the up pipes behind the turbo for any signs of soot around the connection.
Any performance issues other than the stalling and poor MPG's?
Last contact 12-23-08. Truck at dealer for diagnostic. Put on tester and found PCM memory failure P0605, the dump code for having a chip installed. I reset the Bully Dog to stock since, and had no stalling until yesterday when I had 2 stalls. Today 60 miles no stalls. Suggested I may have mechanical problem with wires fraying/leaks/other. I guess
Ill try that. Does having the injector wires inside the valve covers cause any problems that outside injectors would not. My skid steer (3 cylinder NewHolland 67 HP) is outside constantly, exposed and no problems at 1700 hrs. Thanks
You can pull the valve covers and check them if ya want but that would just cause a injector to missfire. Not your truck to stall... You can do a buzz test to see if there is an injector issue. But i doubt there is. If i were you i would go and get a blue international CPS and see if that helps.... I know you have replaced it a couple of times but this whole scenario sounds way to much like a CPS issue.

Thanks. What would that accomplish and what should it tell us if it works?
The idea sounded strange at first but now.......
