I have a 292 in my 62 f100 4x4 4speed And in the process of seeing why it is smokeing so much. I have a good 390 sitting in a wrecked truck can you swap out the 292 for the 390 or do u have to change bell houseings or anything else?
This will be a difficult swap. The biggest difficulty is that the FE engines were installed with side-mounted engine supports, with one at the end of the transmission.
There is one exception: 352 equipped 4x4 trucks in '65 and '66 only. In these 4x4s, the 352 had the front snout engine mount, the the special timing cover, the special FE bellhousing with the ears for mounting as your 292 bellhousing has now, and the center dropped exhaust manifolds.
If you can find a complete 4x4 with a 352, you SHOULD be able to swap a 390 into your truck with the 352 parts.
Even with these parts, the problem will not be with the parts - any external parts that fit a 352 will bolt onto a 390 correctly. Any problems will be the differences between the '62 and the '66 - but if they are both 4x4 trucks, I am given to understand that they are the same frame ad body wise.
