Should I buy this 292?

Found a 292 from a 59 f100 with what was said to have 34k original miles. He said it has been pulled out and sitting for over 25 years. I guess the guy put a 390 in it years back. Asking 400 bucks. Says it's complete. I have a 223 that has been sitting for 25 years in my truck that I thought would be better to swap other that rebuild. Should I get it? Any thing particular to look out for. Thanks

292 is a good engine and that was the original V8 for a 1959 F-100. I think it is a good idea.

The price really depends on how it was stored. Dry, protected from rodents, etc? Either way you will still need to refresh the engine, rebuild carb., new seals and gaskets, new plugs, wires, hoses etc. However if the mileage is true, you won't need to machine the block, crank, etc.

$400 is high for a pig in a poke, but at least in the ballpark depending on what heads are installed, intake, carb? etc. Includes starter, brackets, generator etc? That's what makes the price swing - from "they should be paying you" to haul it away, to a few hundred dollars. I'd be skeptical of the mileage.

I haven't seen it yet. He says it's complete has starter bell housing etc. Found a 302 "builder block" that a guy in town wants a 100 bucks for

'59 would have shipped with the Y block, that's probably what you want, in my opinion. Bring $300 in crisp new hundreds. $200 in one pocket, $100 in the other as reserve.

Start peeling them off... He'll help ya load it up on the truck..

How could the seller determine the engine only had 34,000 miles? Probably from the odometer reading.

Do not believe the miles shown on the odometer! Thru 1991, the odometer reads to 99999.9 then returns to ZERO!

The miles are just words without documentation. An engine that's been sitting 25 years is really no better than a core at the point of sale. And yes the heads would mean a lot to me. 59 heads are ok could be the 113 used in 58.

22F0 = Block cast June (F) 22, 1970 (0).

Thanks! Does the C8 mean it's a 68 design, just manufactured in 70?

The block has a 1968 casting number: C8AM-6015-B .. Casting date code: 22F0 = June 22, 1970.

Casting numbers are foundry marks, cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers.

Thanks for the info, it is much appreciated. I know these aren't stock for our trucks, so I am not sure if this is the right place to ask but is there really any difference with the Mexican 302 blocks or are they all the same

The SBF Mexican blocks supposedly have wider main caps and substantially more metal in the main webbing over all a stronger block. Never had my hands on one myself but no surprise as they are a very rare animal up here in the north.

Not a bad deal. I doubt if the heads are worth messing with, probably don't have hard seats. You will need a rear sump pan and pickup tube. Pay attention to where your dipstick tube goes, mix and match the wrong stuff and you might end up with no place for one.
