I have a buddy looking for an engine block heater for his 2000 F350 PSD, since his does not have one and his truck would not start this AM when it was -3. Anybody have any opinions on what to get? THANKS!
IIRC, all the PSD's come with block heaters, some just dont have cords. Have him look for an orange cord (might be covered in dirt) above the oil filter. That's the block heater cord. When you find it, follow it forward and you should find a plug for it tucked behind the front bumper around the drivers side tow hook.
Tell your buddy to make sure to use synthetic oil in the engine (like Rotella 5w40) and it will start when it gets cold... Dino oil gets like jello and the injectors will not fire properly, resulting in no start.. But, yes the engine heater would be nice..
All PSDs had block heaters? Even ones destined for southern locations? Is that accurate or an assupmtion? I had a discussion like this on another forum about Jeeps, that all of them are 4x4s. They are not, they do make 2wd Wranglers and such. My buddy is much, much more mechaniacally savy than I am and I am pretty sure that if there was soemthing there, he would have found it. I passed this info along to him and he will be crawling under there today. I will let you know what he finds. Thanks for the info.
My truck came from Texas and it has one. I am not sure if they all do but must do....Have him look in the front bumper for the cord that is where they usually hide it.

This is almost mandatory I'd say. I switched from 15W40 dino to 5W40 synthetic (both Rotella) on Sunday evening. All day Sunday she wouldn't start until late afternoon, and it was in the 30's all day. That was on the dino. Sunday night, I did the change to Rotella synthetic and this morning it was 20* F out at 5AM when I cranked her. She spun almost like it was summer!! Fired right up too! Warmed up faster as well. That was without using the block heater either. And my dino was fresh too - just changed out last Thursday so it was only in there for 3 days!
Rotella Synthetic 5W40 or Schaeffer's 9000 5W40 if he can get it. Mandatory for winter weather, but I might just run it year 'round now.

I had the similar experience over on the east side of town, my friend.
I agree switch to syn. if you can afford a little bit more for oil and get the Schaeffers 9000 if you can it is a night and day difference since last winter.
They do hide the BH plugs pretty good if they have never been used.

Yeah, they do. Its a pretty common question on here come this time of year. The picture Robin (PaysonPSD) has is a big help when it comes to finding it.
