It skips 5th when cold (below 0F) because we couldn't make it shift 3-5 when it was very cold. The 3-4 shift is MUCH easier to make.

It NEVER uses all six gears, even in tow/haul.
There is no time that it would make sense to shift 4-5. That would be shifting from 1.09:1 to 1:1. That's a 9% drop. If that shift were made at 3000 RPM you would get an engine speed drop of 270 RPM, but in reality it would be less than that because the torque converter will absorb some of the RPM drop. So you'd be making a shift with less than 200 RPM drop.
