alternator

Battery light just came on I guess it's my alternator.Got 130000 on it.Any suggestions on aftemarket.Not a Ford dealer close.Maybe I need a little more juice,I pull a trailer most of the time, it has 2 batteries and a lot of lights and electric over hydraulic brakes..Thanks Carl

I'd put a voltmeter on it before I got carried away... check your connections on the alternator, the cables,, clean the battery posts. If the batteries are more than 3 years old they mey be suspect as well. One of my gauges is actually a voltmeter... really tells you whan you have a charging problem. The engine running should have 14 volts +/-0.5 volts with the glow plugs off. Mine barely makes 12 volts with the glow plugs on.

Put in new batteries about a month ago.I will stick a volt meter on it in the morning.Thanks

You might have the same problem that I had a few years back, and my mom and step-father had happen just yesterday.

My step-dad just replaced his batteries a month ago, and the alternator died on him. He had to swap in a new alternator yesterday, and it's running like a champ now. They are currently driving from Detroit down to Louisiana towing a camper trailer.

A few years back, I replaced the original batteries after they finally gave up the ghost. A few weeks later, the alternator crapped out on me, and I had to replace it as well.

Every now and then, old batteries put just enough of a strain on the alternator to weaken it. Slapping in new batteries for some reason causes it to quit. I never found a good explanation as to why, but it happens.

I saw this happen! Mechanic slaps a new alternator on without charging up battery.

Have your Alt tested. Auto parts stores do it for free. If it tests good, check wiring. 130,000 is pretty good for Alt.

I went with a 140A HD unit from these guys.
High Output Alternators,Alternator Parts, High amp
Told him about my previous experience with some others of ebay, he seemed very knowledgeable about why the other were not working on a diesel and what was causing my problems. I have had zero problems with this one. I have heard nothing but good about the DB alternators as well.

The problem with factory alternators are for gas engines. 110 amps @6k, we are lucky to get 80 amps @3k. All powerstroke should have dual alternators or a true diesel alternator. With glow plugs on mines make 11 volts.
