What brand of alternator did you put on? Just because it's "new" doesn't mean it's good.
Check the harness plug at the back of the alternator. The wires are notorious for breaking right at the plug-in. If that's not it then have the alternator bench tested.
Have you checked your batteries? Also is the new alt the right one? If you put too small of alternator it will not hold the batteries at proper charge. You will need a DVOM to check the voltage while running. Most auto stores will check batteries for free
As mentioned, "new" alternators are often bad right out of the box. Happened to me earlier this year.
The battery light on the dash is an indicator that your batteries are not being charged, and it could be your alternator, your batteries, your grounds, or a number of other items that are much more difficult to troubleshoot. I'd start by visually inspecting all wires, including your grounds. Check for corrosion at any of the connection points (on the battery, the frame, and the engine block) as well as visible damage to the wires due to heat or chafing. If everything looks good, have the alternator bench tested and the batteries load tested. If they're all good, things get more complicated.
