taking the tailgate off ???

Hi I went to replace the tailgate hinges (bed side) on a trk today.I got the metal straps off by posioning the gate to slip them off,BUTT it looks like both sides of the gate are ball+cup style.So was the gate made to come off and whats the trick.Thanks OR no trick the hinge on one side needs to be unbolted ???

The right hand tailgate pivot does have the slot to allow you to lift that end off. Tilt the gate open about 10 inches and pull the gate in line with the angle it's at.

OK thanks I figured there SHOULD be a slot there at some angle.A PO must of done some mousing.

You have unbolt the hinge. There is no slot on 73-79's.

I WISH the tailgate had some sort of slot like modern trucks.

You have to unbolt one or sometimes both hinges to get the gate off.

The bolts (2 per side) should be 9/16, should have to only remove one side then lift gate off. I recommend having someone help hold the gate as you remove the second bolt.

If the nuts come loose (they're on a weld clip) you can get to them through the tail lamp hole when you put it back together use some anti-sieze compound on the bolts so they don't rust up
