5W-40 and trans bell-housing leak

Quick history...I've got the ol' wet trans bell-housing drip..Had it since the truck was new.I've never had a single drop hit the ground and the truck is parked in the same spot since it was new.I took it too the dealer when it was new and right away they said it needed a new rear main seal bla bla bla...After all the reading on here about other guy's having the same "issue" and from their advise,I decided not to fix it...It's not broke so I'm not going to fix it!17,000 miles and yet too have a drop on the ground.

With all that said...I am wanting to switch from a 15W-40 oil to a 5W-40 syn oil.My question is...With that 5W-40 oil being thinner would that make my "leak" worse????Thanks for your time and help.

I am switching to 5w-40 synthetic next time around and would also like to know the answer to your question because i have a weep on the bell housing also that hasn't hit the ground.

Probably not, since at NOT the oils are the same viscosity.

I went to syn last oil change, about 2 months ago, and have had the infamous "hanging drip" for the last year that I've owned the truck and haven't seen any on the ground yet.

............but we have had a high temp of about 2 degress above zero for the past week!

I agree - will not cause more leakage. Most of the old school thoughts on synthetic causing leakage was compatibility with soft goods (seals, etc) from what I remember. The viscosity is a non-issue.

I had the infamous wet bell housing and when I switched to Rotella Synthetic there was still none that ever ended up in my driveway. Maybe some dripped out on the highway, but none in the driveway.
Now I did have my bedplate seal replaced a year ago and it wasn't a bum deal at all! Now I have a dry bell housing and while the engine was out, they installed ARP headstuds. I've been very pleased with the results!
