Question harmonic bal. install?

im putting my new harmonic bal. on after my rebuild and i dont remember how to do it. the last time i did it i just used a 2x4 and hit it on. i know that is not good cuz my auto shop teacher from college said it can mess up the front and rear main seals. anybody have a easy way to get this back on?

thanks
chris

I used the bolt to pull it back into place, while keeping it from turning with
this homemade tool and a 50's metal dinning table leg for a cheater pipe...

http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/file12/...icbalancer.jpg

I got jumped about that tool because some guy knew some guy that lost an
eye to a file braking when he was using it as a pry bar.

That's an annealed (normalized actually;) file I was going to make a knife out
of ... see how the end is curved up where the knife's point was going to be? :)

And notice the holes I drilled through the sucker too? ;)
It ain't hard anymore. Nicholson brand file BTW. ;)

Anyway I carefully measured the hole distance my 360FE's harmonic
balancer has and shoved 3/8" bolts through those holes and through the
file/handle and that's all there was to it. They are a weird spacing on mine
and needed 1/32" measuring to get it right.

The key tricks here is the hole spacing and the need(?) for something that
isn't plain ol' straight edged. A little hand grinder will make quick work of
a piece of straight edged steel tho! ;)

ps- more crazy stuff...
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/file12/halfinchopenend.jpg
talkin' about something that could fly to pieces! ;)
That sucker is ~65hrc M@ high speed steel, tooth-to-back.
But it worked great on the thin jam nut on the end of this...
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/file12/damper&shock.jpg
...and it's really a 9/16" open end BTW. ;)
Don't need it anymore anyway because I made a 3/8" fine
thread jam nut from a 5/16" jam nut. :)
pps- Most "problems" just take a little Injun-new-it-tee is all ;)
ppps- and one more from a file...
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/file12/Ford9inch-B.jpg
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/file12/Ford9inch-S.jpg
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/file12/Ford9inch.jpg
The file is threaded and the bolts are turned into those threads
tight then the jam nuts were added then the bolt cutting last.
pppps- bed frame steel and exhaust manifold studs... ;)
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/file12/yoketool.jpg
Set for taking it off... flip it over for putting on the nut. ;)
The longer piece I've used forever, has holes drilled in to hold
things like air-cooled VW flywheels and my FE flywheel too. ;)

They make an actual installer, but you can usually use the bolt. Apply some light oil to the threads and washer and get balancer started on. Start bolt and slowly crank with wrench. Should go on nice and easy. Don't get carried away as you DON'T want to strip the threads out of the crank. Don't have to worry about breaking the bolt(like a chevy), as it's plenty large enough and only using a wrench you'll never have enough gusto to hurt it.

i got it on last night! i went and rented the install tool and it was easy. my next issue is that the power steering pulley doesnt line up perfect. i would say its about 1/4 to maybe a 1/2 inch off. the water pump pulley lines up perfect so its not the crank pulleys. is there a spacer for the ps braket?

I think there was a spacer behind the power steering bracket where it bolted to the head on my 360/390 ...

Is the PS pulley also slightly angled and not parallel with the other pulleys?

Rent a "power steering pulley puller" and pull that sucker out until it lines up.
Easy as that. ;)

What's the harmonic balancer tool look like?
How does it work?

Cool thanks, looks just like my "power steering pulley pusher" except bigger. ;)

I went ahead and bought the puller/pusher set and it's turned out handier for
the neighbors than for me so far. LOL :)

Hey Chris, I saw your motor there last Sat when dropping my block off for a review on the deck squaring. The thing looked really good from what I saw. Cant wait for the video of the cam break in What did yo finally go with internally ? I spied the performer intake, non adj rockers, but the rest is a mystery "LIKE ALL FE's from the outside" lol Hoping John treated you right on the thing.

hey bob, the motor turned out great. i fired it up tonight and it sounds good! the only real thing john did to the motor was .30 over bore and rv cam that he had ground for me.(i dont even know the lift or duration but i trust john) john was nice to me on it and gave me a really good deal, i just wish he would have got it done sooner. 8 months

p.s. thanks again for the crank!
