I'm posting here and not in the 460 section because I never get any responses there.
When I install my harmonic bal and pulley, it makes the belt grooves off about 1/4". It looks like the crank pulley is sitting out too far, but I've had it back off 3 times now and there is no way to get it back further. The spacer between the timing gear and balancer is in as far as it will go, balancer is against it. What am I missing? I spaced out the water pump pulley to match but now installing the alt I've run into the same issue and I'm sure I will again with the power steering pump. Any ideas?
Brian, the correct length for your spacer is 2.750". There is a longer one at 3.00". It may be for an FE but I think it may go on a 460. I don't know for sure. You have a great build going..... good luck with it!!
Thanks for the help. My spacer measures 2.75 so it's right. I put it all back together and spaced my alt bracket out 1/4". Now the water pump and alt line up, gonna have to fab up a p/s pump bracket so I guess I'll just factor that 1/4" in.
Thanks, it sure is taking me forever to finish, but I have a goal of driving it to Indy in September. That's helping my burnout motivation lately.
Looks like you got it. I know I have seen many different sizes of crankshaft pulleys for the 460's and 429s over the years. Of course for different vehicles. I had to do some spacing on mine in my 75 too.
Brian is there possibly of a difference in the harmonic balancer that is used for an internally or externally balance 460? Are you mix matching parts? Just a guess in the dark.
Tip of crank sits about 1/8-1/4" inside the face of the balancer. I've tried everything I can think of to move it in further but no luck.
I have 2 460s, one internal and one external. Both have the same balancer as far as I can tell (I tried both to be sure that wouldn't change it). Both have different crank pulleys (tried each and got the one that was closest, still off though). I've ruled out it being the wrong parts. Funny thing though is that both 460s were complete and running before I took them apart. Wish I knew if the issue was there on the internal balanced engine before I took it apart.
.If you pull the balancer of again measure the pulley by sticking a tape measure through the hole. then measure the shaft distance from the spacer and compare with the 1/8 or 1/4 inch thats left and you will know if it is on all the way.
the crank is about right compared to my for 460. you sure you have the right brackets for the PS pump and alt ? post some pics if you can.
I'm pretty sure the alt mounts up top using that bracket, but I cut off the upper ears and swung it around underneath. Seems to work pretty nicely that way.

I have a 75 460. Your alternator bracket looks completely different than mine. Mine is more inverted and lower to allow use of the first pulley. Does your engine use a smog pump? Second, my water pump pulleys line up with the middle and outer balancer pulleys. On mine, the power steering pump utilizes the inner water pump and middle balancer pulley.
When I went to a 1 wire alternator, I added spacers to the alternator to utilize both outer pulleys, allowing the use of a wider belt and easier change out. I do like the bracket you are using, though as it allows the alternator to sit higher for ease of maintenance. It can be a drag to always lay down to tighten the belt.

Reason: More info
you shouldn't have to space out anything if it were running before without kicking belts.
for sure the crank and water pump pulleys should line up very close without any spacing needed...the accessories should also be close enough when using OEM bracketry designed to work together.
Before you continue to space stuff out, make sure the pulley's are correctly matched and installed correctly. (can you see the fomoco stamp in the crank pulley pointing toward the rad or pointing toward the engine?)
I can't give more info on that alt bracket, it was on the truck when I got it. All I know is it bolts right up and works.
All pulleys are on correctly and I've compared it all to my other engine and they both end up the same. Maybe it was off before and I just never noticed.
