I think in the future we will see more people trading in their 3/4 ton trucks for a new 1/2 ton truck. The recent batch of 1/2 ton trucks are sturdier and more capable than ever. They now meet the needs of many people that used to rely on a 3/4 truck but were only carrying moderate loads. Combine that with a better ride and mileage for everyday use and you have a winning combo.
But the 3/4 ton trucks are becoming more capable at the same time. If you tow big loads, then the Tundra (or any other 1/2 ton) just isn't going to cut it. Never has and never will.
Don't get me wrong I love Ford trucks and my Superduty, but go to any truck pull, and I guarantee that the 'Yota will out pull everything out there, period. Doesn't matter if you have a big block 3/4 or 1-ton, it will be out pull it.
very interesting discussion that i started here. And now you have this pic above at a attempt to make a compact pickup into a heavy duty. it looks short still, bet it will really be a gas hog and in order to make the power needed I bet it will need at least 4.30 gears.
the guy even said that its not even a concept its just a project...and it took alot of pillaging of a couple trucks just to even get it to work...and it only has 300hp just my .02
I'm not going to flame you.... I just want to point out that you basically called your own bluff on this one.
What I was trying to point out was that the Tundra is a very powerful truck and that it can put it to the ground better than any gasser pickup out there. So it shouldn't be considered an inferior pickup, as most of the posts on here have been bashing the truck, when most of these people really haven't seen them perform in the real world.
However, the guy in the story in the original post was obviously overloaded and shouldn't have been on the road.

I'd be willing to bet that hino will last longer and get better mileage that the 6.0 or the 6.4
