Hi Guys, I've run into a problem. When the truck( pre 99 F-250) is cold there is alot of blow by, sounds like a major air leak. I checked the rubber boot from the turbo to the radiator to no avail. It sounds like its coming from that area. When it acts up I have power reduction, but it seems after it warms up the problem goes away. Someone mentioned a possible waste gate valve problem. I hope that's not the case -$500 fix! Any other suggestions?
To be honest it sounds like its just your EBPV activating. Your truck has what is called an EBPV, or exhaust back pressure valve. When its cold outside, it shuts so your truck warms up a bit quicker.
Sounds sorta like a jet engine does it? And when you hit the gas or the brake it stops?
Well hopefully you've just got a boost pressure leak when under load, and you don't have an actual "blow by" issue because that's a symptom of a more serious problem. Does this "sound" occur when at idle? If it does, then that's possibly due to actual blow by, and you should remove the oil filler cap and see what's coming out of there by holding your hand on it and feeling for any pressure.
Yes it does sound like a jet engine, but only when it gets to about 1300rpm. This is the 1st time having heard this (192K miles) sound. Just started it up (8 degrees out)again and it starts about 1300rpm but goes away when at idle.
its not the first winter, I've had the truck since brand new. If at idle it doesn't do it, but if I take it up to 1300 or so rpm it starts to dump. Again, only when its cold but then again that's been alot lately.
So, how hard is it to replace the ebpv? It doesn't do it all the time. Will I wreck anything by not fixing it right away? I took it the local service station and they ran the codes, the only thing came up was the computer module. They don't fix diesels.
