96f150....the donor was a 05 (supposed to be only 28k miles on it) and mine is a 05. I finished it Friday while it was very nice outside. Only thing i noticed was the emergency brake cable seems tight around the top of the diff. exsisting bracket wouldnt line up like the old one. otherwise pretty much swap out. I have enough movement in the splines, that i may have the d shaft shortened later. As long as i dont carry any heavy loads and hit a dip in the road. I did notice backlash seemed to be much more than the .006/.012" that i believe it supposed to be,,,but i took it for a spin and it seemed to be very quiet, gear teeth contact pattern looked great. 3 quarts of Royal purple hopefully will work great. i've never used RP before. It already had the additive. Now i wished i could track back the VIN to make sure the truck had 28k like the man said. I did find a place, for $14.95 ,i can get a real brief report. All i want is verification of mileage. Next spring....4.11 gears maybe., it will help the little v8 that could, or couldnt..... thanks ross

Bobby,,,96 f150,,,i just realized im in the 97-03 section! I was needing info on the 975. I am an engineer and now I know what kind of spring loaded washer or disc your refering to,,,its called a Belleville washer, concave like you mention,,, we use tons of them (small ones) on flywheel nuts on chainsaws, to act as lock washers. I guess one could use a brass drift of the correct size, to hold the side gears in place. One other question...I could not see the carrier side shims, even with a magnifying glass. I know there very thin, i just need to shift one or 2 to the left to reduce that backlash. Im not doing anything yet untill i run it for a while. (have 90 day warranty). One last thing...how could the outer brg/seal be larger on this axle, if the hsg tube outside dia. both measure the same? Maybe it was diff. in pre-04? Sorry for getting long winded...thanks again..paul

Actually the side shims are fairly large. Look toward the outside of the carrier bearing races. Unlike Dana axles, the shims are outside of the bearings instead of underneath them.

Its wierd that you mention the similarity between the 8.8 and 9.75 bearings and seals. When I was rebuilding my axle and went to install my new axle bearings and seals, I noticed the bearings and seals were way too big. When I went to return them for the correct ones, I had to buy them for the 8.8. I wonder if the early 9.75s used the same axle bearings and seals as the 8.8.

Bobby thanks for your help. After looking at my flat rate shop manual sheets, it shows a much more expensive brg and seal for the 7700 lb payload package. These are the ones that used the 7 lugs, semi floater. This hsg assy must have used the larger brgs/seals. It shows the base payload seal for $3.55, and brg at 23 bucks. The heavy payload and the F250 , seal was $8.88, and the brg at $59 bucks. Those are old prices,,,,but there has to be a physical diff. There was one or 2 yrs '97/'98? that the F250 was basically a beefed up 1/2 ton. I guess there was production delays for the new F250 at the time. If you need any factory p/n's or illustrations, on practically any part, let me know. These sheets go 97 thru '01. Many numbers have been superceded i'm sure. If you dont mind,,,i might need your advice when i put 411's in this rearend. In case my email isnt in my profile,,, im at epr1 (at) alltel.net thanks paul

When ever you need advise, PM me here and I will respond usually that day. I get on FTE usually after I get off work.

Sometime this week I am going to make a new thread about what I learned and what made rebuilding my rear axle easier.

Thanks, I got the right seal and got everything out and back in with no problems.
And let the Napa parts guy know what you posted here for the next customer who may need some help on that.
