My mechanic is getting codes P1000, P0308 & P0316. I'm setting about 9mpg. Just threw plug #5 and tapped it and changed all the plugs. We know 308 is a misfire for #8 (and we'll check it tomorrow) but we went to change the cat converters and water came out of the drivers side when we took it off. Also on the way to the shop a friend notice about a cup of fluid come out the tailpipe as I turned a corner. Where is that coming from? Looks like cat converters are OK.
I hate when that happens. If your mechanic knows you have P0308 why isn't he fixing that problem instead of you trying to find help for him? You lucky you even got a misfire code. Fords are notorious for not setting misfire DTCs even when there are misfires ocurring. It's time for a compression and leak down test. Sound like it's time for the heads to come off.
Compression values are relative based on engine condition. Higher mileage less compression. If you read all cylinders there should be no more than a 10% difference between the highest and lowest reading. If one cylinder if much lower you have a problem. If water comes out of a cylinder while you're testing another you have a problem. If two adjacent cylinders are low the head gasket between them is blown. You do the test dry first then wet if you get poor reading. You then do a leak down to confirm and narrow down the problem.
you need to pull #8 plug change it and spark plug before you try anythig eles .it sounds like it could be a bad pug or wire as far as water it may just be condensation this normal as long as you are not losing water out of rad your ok
A cup of water isn't condensation, but it's certainly worth a try to change the plug and COP first. I wouldn't change just the plug on a Ford because they are so hard to get to on the COPs and you have to remove the COP anyway. With the high failure rate of the COPs on Fords you money and time ahead to change them both once you have them out. If you still have misfires after that do the compression and leak down. Do you have steam coming out of the tailpipe(call white smoke by people who don't know better). That's a sure sign of overheating resulting in warped head of blown head gasket. Has this engine been overheated in the recent past. If so it's time to pull out the test equipment. Can you do a leakdown? It tells you a lot. Instead of using engine compression for testing you provide the compressed air and interpret the results you get with the piston at TDC on the compression stroke. If you have problems a leakdown will find them.
first of all, if it has close to 100,000 miles it needs new plugs. the 308 might be the cop, it might just be plugs. the COPS are very durable. i have changed one in 180,000 miles. you dont throw them away just because you took them off. it dont take an hour to pull all 8 of them off. --- next, you say you have a cup of water in the tail pipe. where did the water come from? is it antifreeze or water? if its water and not condensation, where did it come from?--------- put in new plugs, clean up the codes, check the radiator level, then see if the truck has a real problem of not.
Something I did.. I had a prob on #4.. So I swapped the #4 with #1.. #1 is easy to get to. If the problem moves to #1 then I changed the coil..
Hope that helps some?
#5 plug is on the same bank as #8.. Did you put grease on the reamer? The olny thing I can think of is some material on the #5 piston getting blown back in the intake. This is maybe a streach but just some outward ideas.. I've installed inserts before.. never had that for a problem but?
