Has anyone here put on toyota 4x4 stadard non-power steering box? Is it better than the stock 53's? Mine has play in it. Not sure how it is going to steer in bad weather. Will find out today as we are getting snow here in MO. To put power steering on I will have to install a cross member with motor mounts. The engine right now is mounted to the front cross member. The mounts would be in the way of the pump. What is done to mount the pitman arm? I have read it would be different from the one you get in the kits MF sells.
hey pappy there is a screw on the inside { towards the motor } with a jam nut .it is the adjustment screw for the box . loosen the jam nut , then tighten the screw up till you feel in the steering wheel it's binding up . then back off till it isn't binding up and tighten her up . if i remember it all right !!!!. then see how sloppy she is . npd , dennis carpenter , mid fifties and many others sell all the parts to rebuild your stock box . a f-600 box and maybe a couple others up in size , the others can tell ya , are a quicker ratio box , so you might wanna maybe try and find one of them and .....................
Pappy there is someone on the site that documented the installation of the manual Toyota steering box the installation was basically the same as the power unit same type barcket & pitman arm.
Hey pappy, If you go to the very top of ther page and click on articles/spec it will open. Select list articles another page. then find steering and suspension. Click on that. Then scroll down til you find toyota steering box swap for 53 thru 56 ford trucks. Hopefully this will give you the info you need.

Note: the pitman arm is NOT the same spline on the Toy manual box as on the PS box. To use the manual box you will need to fab a hommade pitman arm using the spline end of the manual box arm. IMHO it would be much easier to fab a mount for the pump to relocate it than a pitman arm, or else use one of the tubular universal engine mounts that Mid Fifty sells for your engine. You'll never regret the decision to go with the PS box. How easy the manual box steers FWIU would be somewhat easier than the stock box (especially one that is worn) but somewhat dependent on what size steering wheel you use. The PS box with a 15" wheel is so perfect it was like it was designed that way.
i was poking around in my mid fifty catalog to get some parts ordered , and seen a gm box conversion that seemed pretty straight forward , and those boxes are far more plentiful round here than the 'yota . they all seemed to have returned to mother earth / rusted away to nothing here . semmed so simple and easy i'm seriously considering it for the 53 , but don't wanna make it to easy to drive !!!!!!!!!!!! then THEY will all want to borrow it LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey 55 f350, I had the GM style on a 54 I owned a few years back. Wish I would have kept it. I believe the kit comes with a couple of plates. Make sure you use these. Whoever put this on the 54 I had did not box the frame and eventually the frame cracked. It worked good. I may even think about this setup for my 53. I wonder if there is anyone that is using that type now.
hades ax i drive truck for a living so i'm used to the 40 acre turn around area . the plates come with the kit pappy and i was aking them about it the other day when i placed an order and they too stressed to use the plates as it would crack the frame . oh and ax if it is a pain to turn or park that cures THEM wanting to borrow it !!!!!!! if it requires thought or common sense , nope ................... my cuz billy has another 53 in peices { i keep having some of my spare parts getting absconded with hmmmmmmm...... could it be } that he is torn 'tween the rack and pinion or the gm as he has a clunker monte carlo or easy acess to one , we think has the right box . his is an outright rod though , 347 stroker , etc.
