1st trip to scrapyard

Took my first trip to the scrapyard on Saturday looking for some steel tubing to build a welding table. I was amazed at the pieces available and how cheap the stuff was. It was a huge pile and I got to look through it to see if there was anything that was suitable. I felt like a kid in a candy store. I got plenty of pieces but actually found a table frame for $20 more robust than anything I might have built. If you need any tubing or angle for bracing and have access to a place like this it might save you some $$ to check it out.

Hi Mike,
Yep, scrap prices have plumeted and the stuff is once again piling up. In my way of thinking, high scrap prices only deplete valuable sources for me and drive up the cost of new metal materials. I also feel that high scrap prices promote higher levels of theft.

Later Man...

High scrap prices DO promote theft--and back when I was in Machine shop/steel mill business--they would steel brass bushings and copper and bearings-etc from my back storage yards.
I didn't have a problem after getting security--but that high scrap prices cost me a fortune.
NOW --the lower cost for scrap steel--is great--guys do not threaten to scrap the old trucks as much and tell you some ridiculous price for a truck that has sat and rotted for 10 yrs--and more or less get it for a decent price.....and SAVE it from extinchion(sp) ? Bill

Woohooo!

I'm lucky as far as scrap goes. My buddies own a fab shop and let me dig through the drops bin and the scrap bin. I can typically find anything I need for free. Now, if I just had more room..........

In my experience, all of these statements hold true. When the scrap prices climb, steel prices climb. And the crime climbs. Steel mills shut down this Fall, the scrap prices plummeted and the steel prices have fallen. and will continue to fall for a while.....which means after my tax return, I should be able to get my rotiserrie materials for cheap. On the flipside, I may be layed off since my job is dependent of scrap prices. So I will have plenty of time to build it, lol.

Hi Scott,
Yep, that is definitely the one downside. I hate to see people out of work and furthermore I hate to be in the position of taking advantage of the people who loose their jobs. In effect, that is the cost of enjoying the lower prices. Of course I know of lots of people who plan for and actually look forward to being laid off. Having spent many years in cimmercial and industrial electrical construction work, I had learned to be one of those people. So, I do know the value of time off. I do hate to see people who are just barely making it loose their jobs.

Later...

I'm in the business of buying metal, copper wire mostly, so it's nice to see the price on new insulated wire drop. I also buy steel enclosures and in the last 1-2 years my suppliers have been raising prices and adding surcharges to cover the cost of steel and fuel. The other day I called one of my wire suppliers and found the price of wire went way down. I then called my enclosure suppliers to check prices, still up there. I asked if they were going to have a price adjustment, she said "We had one last August". I said yes, but are you going to have a price adjustment down to reflect the drop in fuel and steel. All she said was, "Ah, no". That'll help the economy.

lol that's a good one. My sanitary bill still has a 10% fuel surcharge, too.
