I pick mine up from local salvage yards. If you are not performning a total prestine frame off restoration, these are easy to find. I have gathered 4 or 5, 78/9 surrounds and about the same amount in 73 to 77 units.
Not very expensive, and some are super super clean.
Well that's good then, because LMC is the last place you should check Dennis Carpenter stopped making OEM reproductions for now because of problems with the aluminum cracking when they stamp it. You can get reproductions from other sources (~$200), but they're not the best quality. A junkyard or eBay is your best bet in my opinion.
I've seen a few over the last couple of months on eBay that go for a reasonable price. Sometimes they don't want to ship it due to it's size, but it shouldn't be tuff to get one, enless you need one yesterday.
Wow, $500 for a grill surround! I know the pick and pull around me sells the surrounds for ~$35, just have to get lucky and find a good one. Most people parting out trucks around me want between $50-$150 for them.
thanks for all the posts..had no idea that they went for that much!!!! mine is just a little bent up from getting up in the truck to work on it....think i may just try to make it look decent for now!!
Usually when doing a $25,000+ restore, most guys don't even stop to think about a $500 grille. Buying an OEM/NOS grille is not for the faint of heart, or the a typical DD. As far as the lockers...where on earth do you shop that you can get a SET of lockers for $500?
Yeah, $500 is way too much for a grill, but it's one of those parts that can make or break a show type vehicle. I will say though, the OEM ones made from Dennis Carpenter are great quality and hopefully they will be up and running reproducing them like mad. They are just as good as NOS equipment. I still don' tknow why they are so expensive, but that's the way it is.
So I'm not sure if anyone has any experience with these vendors, but Parts Train, Speedy Auto Parts, and Car Stuff all have the Grille surround online. They list the part number as D8TZ8200A and they range between $120 and $150. If anyone has tried one of these let us know how it goes.

They are probably that expensive due to the materials and effort into making the dies and actual parts. If you have ever had one of these off the truck you can see how difficult they must be to make.
As for cost - no I would NEVER pay $500 for one. It is a danged grill shell on a work truck! I will however keep nice ones off of trucks I part and sell them to people!
As for people not blinking at a $500 grill shell for these trucks - that is just INSANE to me. As we all do, I LOVE these old trucks, but I face reality and realize that I can have ANOTHER one of these trucks for $500 - so why would I pay that for ONE SMALL PART of one of these trucks. You will NEVER get your $$ back out of one of these trucks if you do a restore or concourse build - so that is not for me. If you have the $$ and time to waste and want to then go for it - it's your truck
Also - this thread has come at a great time. I sell parts off these trucks on craigslist and I have been negotiating online with a guy about a grill shell I have. I LOVE that DC sells them for $500 - as it means I can get more for my original ones I pull and sell!!!!
