Computer box oozing black goo

My 83 300 has its original computer box sitting in the engine bay on the wheel well liner. It has steadily been oozing black goo. Anybody seen this? Truck starts and runs fine.

You should probably keep a spare around in case it let's go. That's called the ignition module. The junkyard will be the best place to get an original motorcraft module, which is the best. Just make sure you get a module with the same color plastic were the wires go into the module. Any Ford or Lincoln car or truck, any size engine will work, so long as the plastic is the same color.

On one truck I had, I carefully removed the rest of the gooy sealant, cleaned it out with electronics cleaner and resealed with epoxy.

I remedied the same situation on both my 82 F100 and 86 F150, like was said before this seems to be common problem on our old trucks. I disassembled the brain boxes, and I used aerosol electric contact cleaner to clean the remaining gunk out. I sealed mine back up with red silicone.

I've always assumed the black goo situation was caused by the original sealant getting weak/brittle and eventually melting from the under hood heat, and from the heat caused by the brain box its self. That's why I patched mine with the red high temp silicone.

Either way I don't believe its anything to get to worried about, I fixed the one in my 82 about 6 years ago, and I think there's 3 years on the patch job on the one in my 86. They both still work just fine.

It is probably there to disipate heat to the housing. Ignition coils are oil filled (some anyway, I guess they use resin s also) . I'd try to seal it up to keep the rest of it in there. A sprae one behind the seat isnt a bad idea

I always keep a spare as well, it's good practice, and will help keep you from walking, if it ever does fail.

I found that the wind backs on the distributor shaft have clogged and the shaft over heats and melts the modulator. The module will go bad shortly, fix it on your terms and not after you get towed.
