I've got a 2001 F 250 with the 4R100 I think. It calls for mercon not mercon V. So is mercon V post compatable or not? What about the universal fluids Amsoil, mobil, schaeffer, etc.? The more I read the more confused I get!
Today I picked up some max life mercon . Anyone got any opinions on it ? I've heard its synthetic is this correct?
What worries me about the mercon verses mercon V issue is this. Why was it that when ford was making mercon and mercon V my owners manual, chilton tech manual , and everything else I read said DO NOT USE MERCON V. Then all of a sudden when ford stops making the old mercon it's miraculously safe , better , and recommended to use mercon V in place of mercon. Kinda makes me wonder who this is really better for!

Ford has stopped making "Mercon" (XT-2-QDX) & has changed the old Mercon-V (XT-5-QMC) recipe, to a dual use fluid Mercon-V/Mercon (XT-5-QM).
So if your tranny has the old, no longer made Motorcraft "Mercon" recipe fluid (XT-2-QDX) specifed, you can now use the new dual use recipe fluid Mercon-V/Mercon (XT-5-QM).
Or if you don't want to change & still have, or can find some old Motorcraft "Mercon" XT-2-QDX, or another brand of Mercon recipe fluid, you could just stay with the old stuff for now.
If the tranny now has the old recipe "Mercon" XT-2-QDX in it, I don't know that I'd mix/top off with the new dual use fluid. Just drain & refill with the new dual use Mercon-V/Mercon (XT-5-QM) fluid, if you want to switch.
here you go straight from jaspers home page this mourning.

Because MERCON V changed. The specs changed to make it compatible with all transmissions that used MERCON. I know the people that did the work to change the fluid and I trust what they did.
Thank you. This is what i've been trying to figure out.
From reading your post on this forum and others I could tell you have some knowledge about what your talking about.
Before this 2001 F 250 all of my other fords have been pre 1985.
It was very confusing trying to find the right atf when everyone said don't use V then said it's ok. I knew either V changed formulations , or that ford just changed their stance when they quit maken mercon ( which scared me).
Chevron MD-3 looks like an excellent "universal" choice for older Mercon/Dexron and even Type A applications. Because Ford stopped licensing Mercon (other than Mercon V and SP) and GM stopped licensing Dexron (other than Dexron IV), the oil companies are stuck. They can no longer legally sell you exactly what your owners manual specifies. They can make a product that exactly conforms to the old standard, but only can "recommend" it for that application.

Bingo, Chevron MD-3 is the fluid to go to for Mercon-only specified apps. Great fluid too.
